Rachel has such a powerful personal story, and so much wisdom to share. A very inspirational woman all round. Rachel has built an inspirational and forward thinking law firm, which really breaks the mould both in terms of how her team can bring flexibility and work-life balance into the profession and also make professional legal support affordable to smaller businesses and entrepreneurs.
Rachel is one of the UK’s most respected business advisors. A commercial lawyer with over 15+ years’ experience, she is a member of the expert Small Business panel of advisors to UK government and has also advised a wide range of private sector organisations including Rolls-Royce, Serco, Puma, Capita and RBS.
She qualified at international law firm Addleshaw Goddard and went on to practice law at DLA Piper LLC, specializing in IP, commercial contracts and procurement. She moved “in-house” as Commercial Director within BT Global Services, managing major contracts over £50m, and as a upcoming senior leader she was coached and mentored by experts across the business. This resulted in Rachel blooming into a rare breed of lawyer equipped to make risk-based commercial decisions - with specialist knowledge acquired in sales, finance, HR, negotiation, dispute resolution and business acquisition.
In 2009 she started a family – and in pursuit of the holy grail of work/life balance – took the plunge into entrepreneurship. She founded Serenwood, a niche consultancy offering practical commercial support to small business clients with revenues ranging from £100K to £100m. Under Rachel’s guidance, the team at Serenwood have grown a loyal client base and offer a much-needed (if somewhat disruptive!) alternative to accessing complicated, expensive legal advice from traditional law firms. Her vision for Serenwood is to offer the market a hands-on, jargon-free service to tackling commercial challenges, whilst creating flexible working opportunities for bright legal brains who crave a happy work/life balance within the traditional legal profession.
Rachel’s personal passion is empowering & inspiring other female entrepreneurs, especially working mums, and she is the mentor & coach of choice for ambitious women wanting to build, grow and scale sustainable and impactful businesses. She runs a number of networking groups in the Yorkshire region with an emphasis on exploring how women can break free from conformity, overcome adversity, and challenge the status quo. She is currently authoring her first book “The Law of Intrepid Greatness” and this year launched an online programme “Growth & Greatness”. She is married, lives in Yorkshire with her two young daughters, and in her spare time can be found singing with European ladies’ barbershop champions The White Rosettes.
